Electromagnetic radiation and electromagnetic sensitivity
...how to wrap your head around what might or might not be true and work out if you need to protect yourself
What I hope to achieve with this series of articles on EMFs
I am not intending to convince anyone there is a problem with EMFs. Either you believe there is or you believe there isn’t, and frankly, I don’t have an adequate knowledge base to convince anyone of anything.
I believe I am an electromagnetic sensitive.
I believe I have become sick in the last 12 months thanks to local 5G installations.
I need to find solutions to return myself to my once robust but now frail state of health.
Anyone confronting something similar is welcome to join me on this journey.
Understanding the jargon
I am completely out of my depth when it comes to all the invisible electrical stuff around us. What are frequencies, what are waves, what is radiation, how is it measured, what aspects of it might or might not do us harm? I have no real idea so I have to depend on the “experts”.
The link below will take you to a good beginners summary if you are keen to understand what these words mean, but take their conclusions with a grain of salt.

Can the invisible stuff make us sick?
What I do know is that I have been sick since 5G was installed in my area, with a multiplicity of issues related to my body’s electrical systems. I suspect that what ails me since I was diagnosed and hospitalised with “covid” in April 2022, and from which I graduated to long covid, has nothing to do with any virus and everything to do with 5G. Of course, I am not the first to suspect this, and I cannot prove it.
Does anyone have the expertise to help us?
In the rural area in Australia where I am living, our doctors are not on top of covid or long covid, let alone electromagnetic sensitivity and its likely effects, so there is zero medical help available. All any of us can do at this stage is research and research and research, grab what facts we can and attempt to form a rational picture, despite the still significant gaps in our knowledge.
As my health was my only real asset before 2022, I must do whatever I can to protect and recover what is left of it. And, as a retiree dependent on the state pension, I have to do that with zero disposable income. Any research I do is thanks to the internet and any solutions I find have to be dirt cheap or free - a big ask.
Researching the researchers
So I have to research the researchers as my starting position. There are several on Substack, who are doing good work to communicate the issue to novices in this subject area. I am learning some of the basics from them. Roman Shapoval concentrates on EMF issues, where Ray Horvath includes 5G in a broader context. They are a good place to start.
Researching primary sources
Another source I have learned to use since I started researching covid in 2020 is medical and other scientific papers. I read somewhere that around 80% of these are fatally flawed by bad research design and/or false conclusions from the data. I must say, I have found the papers I have read to be mostly appalling, including those I want to be true. The mantra of “follow the science” is rendered utterly ludicrous when you realise that supposed scientists are not very bright.
Even if the research is well designed and conducted, it can be hard to find the papers we need, if we do not already know the correct technical language to search on.
If you run a search on something like “the harmful effects of 5G”, you will get pages and pages of govenment propaganda telling you there are no harmful effects. But if you run a search on any of the following you will find pages and pages of scientific papers on just this subject, albeit most of them debunking the idea.
Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS)
Electromagnetic sensitivity
Electromagnetic sensitives
Electrical sensitivity (ES)
Microwave syndrome (replaced by EHS)
Electromagnetic fields
Electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs)
James Corbett has produced a few good videos on the importance of knowing the right language to base your research on, and that goes for this topic as much as any other. He has a whole series of papers and videos on how to research.
Where to start with the scientific papers
The best papers I have found to read when I am starting to research a topic, are papers that review other papers. They can provide a quick insight into the type of research being done and the results of that research. The article below got me started, and unfortunately re-enforced my notion that no-one is actually treating this topic seriously; the research is so flawed.
Review of the scientific evidence on the individual sensitivity to electromagnetic fields (EHS)
This paper also covers a lot of ground.
Possible Effects of Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Field Exposure on Central Nerve System
Almost overwhelmingly the research is dependent on test subjects assessing their own electromagnetic sensitivity and assessing their own reactions to EMF exposure. All hearsay. All qualitative rather than quantitative. Nothing that can actually be measured.
Very little of the research even tried to establish if there are any biochemical and physiological markers in the bodies of those reporting EMF reactions. When we consider the severity of the suffering of those claiming to react badly to EMF exposure, there must be something happening in their bodies. It may not be caused by EMFs, but let’s at least find those biological and physiological markers in the self reported sensitives first. They must exist. Surely someone somewhere can work out what to measure? Then it should be simple to trigger increased symptoms with EMFs to show a link (or not) between the markers and EMF exposure.
Too much of the research has failed to admit their own limitations and instead they have concluded that either there is no proven link between EMFs and the symptoms experienced by sensitives, or, even worse, that it is all in our minds. Duh.
As I said, scientists these days aren’t very smart.
The topics I will be covering in this series
This is the research I need to do for myself and that I will post when I have understood enough to write about it. Some of these may roll into one another as I learn to understand them better, and new topics may emerge.
